Privacy vs. Confidentiality in Child Therapy

While confidentiality is important to us as adults, children’s rights are more limited with regards to their parents. We like to assure children that they do have privacy–that their parents have agreed not to ask the therapists about the content of their therapy sessions. However, if the child brings up a topic that concerns his or her safety, the therapist and child as a team will decide how to proceed. This may include bringing the parent into the session to discuss the issue.

Most children seem to understand and appreciate that parents are concerned with their safety, and readily agree to these conditions.
